A Call Starts the Clean-Out

A call starts with the items you want gone and where they sit. You might describe a garage corner, a basement sofa, a spare room or furniture already at the curb. Share what you know; a finished list isn't needed. The conversation helps turn the pile into a job with a clear scope.

  1. Name what stays. Identify the belongings you want to keep, including anything stored among unwanted furniture or boxes. Papers, family keepsakes and everyday household items belong outside the hauling list. You can point them out without moving heavy pieces. If someone else is making decisions about the contents, say who will approve what goes.
  1. Separate plans to sell or give away. A chair promised to a neighbor or a table listed for sale should stay off the load. You arrange any sale or charity pickup yourself. Tell the crew which items have another plan, even if they're standing beside things marked for hauling. Nobody needs to finish arranging those plans to start the call.
  1. Describe the haul-away items. Give an ordinary description: a sofa, two bookcases, several boxes or the contents of one room. Say whether the items are upstairs, downstairs, in the garage or outside. A written list and photos can help you keep track of choices. Leave heavy items where they are and leave the carrying to the crew.
  1. Give special drop-off items their own plan. Keep oil-based paint, household cleaning chemicals and household batteries off the hauling list; use SWALCO's accepted-items page for its household chemical waste drop-off options. SWALCO's program page says collections require appointments and accept residential waste from Illinois residents, excluding business waste. You can discuss the clean-out now while arranging those separate items.
  1. Talk through the path and the work. Describe stairs, narrow doorways, a gate, the distance from the room to parking and any shared entrance. Mention building access arrangements during the call. One of our local junk removal partners goes over the load, the route, the scope and the price with you before work begins. Ask on the call who handles any separate disconnection or dismantling.
  1. Point out the agreed items at the visit. Walk through what stays, what has a separate pickup plan and what goes on the truck. The crew looks at the contents and access before loading. If the list has changed, bring up the change before anyone starts. After the agreed load is carried out, the crew sweeps the cleared work area.

You don't need to carry furniture to the driveway or work out the whole clean-out alone. Call from wherever you are in the decision. A rough description gives the conversation a useful starting point, and the visit follows the items and access you discuss.
